AT&T Expanding Wireless Coverage in Albany

AT&T (NYSE:T) has announced a planned investment of more than $50 million in the upstate New York wireless network in 2007.

This will bring AT&T's three-year investment in the territory, which spans from Buffalo to Albany, to more than $230 million. The investment is part of AT&T's overall network strategy to continually expand and enhance its wireless network and enhance service reliability.

The company's plans include adding 18 new cell sites and approximately 500 new radios to nearly 350 cell sites throughout the state. It also includes 150 new hardware cabinets and power amplifiers to increase capacity.

Three new cell sites that are planned for greater Albany this year will enhance wireless coverage for AT&T customers in the Karner Industrial Park and on Route 155 in Guilderland, as well as the intersection of Route 20 and Route 155. This new cell site will also provide additional wireless coverage to the Pinehurst Estate area and the cross section of Route 155 and the Washington Avenue Extension.

A planned Schenectady cell site will deliver new wireless coverage to Interstate 890 between exit 5 to exit 7, as well as the Hamburg Avenue, Duane Avenue, Brandywine Avenue, Michigan Avenue and the Mount Pleasant areas. Residents and visitors to the town of Colonie will also notice enhanced wireless service later this fall or early winter near the intersection of Route 7 and Albany Shaker Road, as well as Airport Park and Kaiser Industrial Park.

Later this year, AT&T will introduce its blazing-fast third-generation (3G) network in Albany. The network will provide customers with access to broadband-type speeds for their laptops. AT&T customers will be able to quickly access feature-rich wireless content on their 3G handsets, including videos, pictures and the latest music, entertainment, news and weather programming, through MEdia Net, the company's mobile Internet portal. AT&T's 3G network also supports new services, such as Video Share, which lets customers share live, real-time video while having a conversation on their wireless phones.

"It is our goal to ensure that AT&T customers in Albany and all over the country have the very best wireless experience possible — which includes great coverage and quality of service," said Robert Holliday, AT&T's vice president and general manager for wireless operations in upstate New York. "Our ongoing investment in the upstate New York network gives customers the benefits of a state-of-the-art voice and data network along with cutting-edge wireless devices."

AT&T has delivered dramatic change in upstate New York — a direct result of the company's continuing efforts to expand and enhance its network operations and the synergies that come from being part of the world's largest communications company.

AT&T diligently monitors the quality and coverage of its network. In addition to third-party vendors that assess the company's network performance, AT&T wireless network engineers constantly monitor the network and drive tens of thousands of miles throughout upstate New York each year to ensure that the network is operating at peak efficiency. -AT&T
