n February Dr. Cecile Rose, a lung specialist at National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver had diagnosed a man with lung disease which may be potentially caused by his habit of eating lot of Micro wave popcorn daily. He had eaten two bags of microwave popcorn a day for about 15 years. The lung disease normally known as 'popcorn lung' is normally found with food plant workers.
In response to this findings the world's largest microwave popcorn manufacturer Con Agra Foods decided to stop using butter flavoring which potentially causes bronchiolitis obliterans, otherwise known as 'popcorn lung'.
Weaver Popcorn, the nation's second-largest popcorn manufacturer, has reportedly discovered a new ingredient to provide butter flavor.ConAgra's Child's said the company is still trying to develop an alternative flavoring and hopes to completely phase out diacetyl within a year.

Con Agra on Popcorn Lung
Con Agra has released the following information today on Popcorn Lung Disease and safety.
Safety of Microwave Popcorn
ConAgra Foods is confident that microwave popcorn is safe to prepare and consume. Additionally, the Food and Drug Administration considers diacetyl to be safe for use in food, and no definitive study to date has shown any reason for concern about diacetyl in microwave popcorn for consumers. But to eliminate even the perception of risk for consumers, and to provide the safest possible environment for workers who handle large quantities of diacetyl, the company has decided to eliminate the use of added diacetyl in its microwave popcorn products.
