New features of the enhanced Verizon e-mail include the ability to access accounts from any computer with an Internet connection, using a re-designed Webmail application, increased storage capacity and an unlimited e-mail retention period for active users, giving customers better and easier ways to stay connected at home and on the go. Verizon also plans to eventually expand the new e-mail offering to its Verizon High Speed Internet customers.
"Personal e-mail, including digital photo, music and video files, is a critical part of everyday life and we're making it easier for our customers to conveniently access and manage their mail," said Peter Castleton, director of Verizon Consumer Broadband Services. "This update to our Verizon.net e-mail accounts frees FiOS customers to store up to 4 GB (gigabytes) of messages online for as long as they want, plus access it online or on their cell phones with the same capabilities they enjoy at home."
Verizon has increased FiOS customers' e-mail storage to 4 GB (gigabytes) across their verizon.net accounts, which is significantly higher than the storage typically offered by cable Internet service providers. In addition to larger storage and wireless phone accessibility, users have the option of signing up for the free enhanced Webmail application, developed with Laszlo Systems, that includes:
* The ability to import contacts from other mail services;
* A preview window for message viewing;
* Drag-and-drop capability;
* Improved search capability;
* Automatic email alerting.
Verizon.net broadband customers also will continue to have at their disposal advanced spam filtering and virus protection, as well as the ability to easily switch email services through Verizon TrueSwitch.
The Mobile E-mail application that allows access to Verizon.net email accounts is available in the Verizon Wireless' Get It Now virtual store on the following handsets: LG enV, the MOTORAZR V3m, the LG VX8300, ChocolateTM by LG, the Samsung SCH-u740, MOTOKRZR K1m, and MOTORAZR2 V9m. There is a $5 monthly access charge. The service is expected to be available on additional handsets in the coming weeks and months. Subscription charges for Get It Now applications vary and airtime charges apply when browsing, downloading and using certain applications. Verizon Wireless customers with America's Choice Premium calling plans can access Mobile E-mail for no additional charge or airtime charges.
