Dune Networks, Vitesse To Interoperate For Dense Ethernet Aggregation Applications

Dune Networks, a leading provider of networking devices for Data Center, Enterprise, and Carrier Ethernet platforms and Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation, a leading provider of innovative and technically advanced IC solutions for networking applications, announced their intent to have Dune's next-generation devices and Vitesse's recently introduced triple-speed Ethernet MACs interoperate using next generation XAUI interfaces.

“The combination of Vitesse and Dune's devices enable highly-flexible Ethernet aggregation solutions for Enterprise and Data Center switches, by supporting multiple types of host interfaces for both copper and optical links,” commented Ofer Iny, Dune's CTO.

These devices are critical for driving down port costs for Gigabit Ethernet, which is the primary technology of choice for the next generation Carrier, Enterprise, and Data Center systems. Cost reductions are achieved through higher port density, lower pin-count, longer board trace lengths, and better scalability versus existing SPI-4 solutions. The next generation SERDES-based interfaces like XAUI and SPAUI™ extend the standard XAUI - by introducing channelization, packet interleaving, and refined flow control.

“Both companies' mutual support of multiple host interfaces underscores our on-going commitment to provide our customers with seamless, interoperable, highly-capable and flexible solutions,” said Tony Conoscenti, Vitesse's Vice President of Product Marketing. “Our Ethernet MACs, such as the recently introduced Barrington-II™, which supports these next generation interfaces, are prime examples of how line card designs can be simplified and the cost of Gigabit Ethernet ports can be reduced by as much as four times from the previous generation."

Both Dune and Vitesse will provide additional information about their respective products and timeline for interoperability to customers upon request.

SPAUI™ combines the benefits of both XAUI and SPI4.2 standards into a single SERDES-based interface supporting MAC/Framer, NPU and Traffic Management interconnection requirements.
