The Minneapolis Institute of Arts puts the "fun" back into fundraising on September 28, with Art Perchance, the museum's annual evening of food, games, and drawings for unique works of art. The event is sponsored by The Friends of the Institute.
Art is at the heart of Art Perchance. Galleries and artists from all over Minnesota, as well as several from out of state, have generously donated more than forty pieces of artwork to the event. Much of the art is two-dimensional, ready to hang, and created in an array of mediums, including oil, watercolor, pastel, pencil, pen, photography, and collage. Some works are three-dimensional and are constructed from wood, glass, ceramic, or bronze. Artists featured in last year's event include Doug Beasley, Chris Cinque (donated by Five Two Six Gallery), Jil Evans, Robert McCoy, Howard Christopherson, and the MIA's own Jodie Ahern.
The donated pieces will hang in the museum during the week leading up to the event and serve as the ultimate prizes in the drawing at the end of the evening. Guests receive tokens for the prize drawing by playing games of chance and skill, testing their knowledge about works of art in the museum's permanent collection. One token will be drawn for each donated artwork.
The primary goal of this year's Art Perchance is to increase the principal of the Friends Transportation Fund to $100,000, nearly doubling its size. The fund helps pay for transportation costs for Twin Cities schools visiting the museum for educational tours. In the past the fund has only reached a fraction of area schools, but the increase would enable the fund to reach many more. "Thank you very much for your generosity," one teacher said. "Seeing that we are a school of low-income families, your funding gave us an opportunity to see amazing art and expand our students' minds and hearts, as they learned to appreciate art."
"Art Perchance" will take place on Friday, September 28, 2007. Festivities begin at 7 P.M. The "midway" of carnival games is open from 7 to 9 P.M. The art drawing and live auction begins at 9 P.M. Museum doors close at 11 P.M. Valet parking is available. Basic ticket price is $75, including 3 tokens for the art drawing. Patron level tickets from $150 to $500 also include tokens, and special benefits, as well as an opportunity to meet the artists and preview the art at a reception before the party. -- www.artsmia.org
