Kuznetsova hits No. 2 in world rankings

Russian tennis star Svetlana Kuznetsova has reached her highest-ever position in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) rankings. Before the start of the U.S. Open August 28, the 22-year-old tennis star held fourth place in the WTA rankings.

Although she failed to take the U.S. Open title, losing 6-1, 6-3 in the final to Belgian player Justine Henin, Kuznetsova moved up to second place overall. Her earlier highest ranking was third.

Kuznetsova took the position of her fellow Russian, Maria Sharapova, in the rankings. Sharapova, the 2006 U.S. Open winner, was knocked out of the tournament by 30th seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in the third round, and dropped down from second to fourth place.

Another Russian tennis player, Anna Chakvetadze, beaten in the semifinal by Kuznetsova, moved up one place to fifth.
