The series opens at the Edinburgh Festival Theatre (Friday 21 September, 7.30pm) and at The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall (Saturday 22 September, 6.00pm). Stéphane's Playlist brings Music Director Stéphane Denève's choice of excerpts from the forthcoming Season, including Stravinsky's Firebird, Elgar's Enigma Variations and Strauss' Also Sprach Zarathustra. Stéphane Denève will also be introducing the Orchestra's new Assistant Conductor David Danzmayr, who will be sharing the podium for his first Scottish performances.
For the third successive year concert-goers to the first Classic Bites concert, this year Stephane's Playlist, will be able to download the complete performance on a track-by-track basis for free. In 2005, nearly 30% of attendees to Classic Bites downloaded the concert, with the most popular downloaded work being Mozart's Marriage of Figaro overture. Last year the Classic Bites concerts featured an excerpt from a new work by French composer Guillame Connesson which proved to be the most popular Classic Bites download of 2006.
Classic Bites continues at The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall at the earlier midweek time of 6.00pm, with The Orchestra's Playlist (Wednesday 7 November, 6.00pm). Over the summer the RSNO musicians voted for their favourite orchestral works, with the top ten most popular selected to be performed. Of these, the three most popular choices are Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No2, Sibelius' Symphony No5 and Barber's Adagio for Strings. During the concert, RSNO musicians will explain to the audience what makes their choices so important to them.
The third Classic Bites concert of the series will be Your Playlist. In an unprecedented move, RSNO concert programming will be decided completely by the public, (The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Wednesday 27 February, 6.00pm). From Friday 7 September aficionados and newcomers to classical music alike will be able to vote for their favourite orchestral works. Voting will close on Friday 30 November and the winning programme will be chosen from the most popular public selections. Voting will close on Friday 30 November with the winning programme announced on the Classic Bites website ( www.classicbites.org.uk).
The final concert of the series, The Movie Playlist (The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Wednesday 2 April, 6.00pm) presents a selection of passages from popular film scores. Led by David Danzmayr, the concert will feature music from films such as Jurassic Park, Star Wars, 633 Squadron and Lord of the Rings.
RSNO Chief Executive Simon Woods announced the series: "Classic Bites has for a number of years been a successful taster to the RSNO's season. It's an affordable and accessible way to hear great orchestral music played by Scotland's National Orchestra, and I am especially pleased that this year we have introduced an element of unpredictability by asking the audience to take part in the choice of music." -- www.rsno.org.uk
