The Detroit Symphony Orchestra in cooperation with the Detroit Public Schools and WRCJ 90.9 FM, Detroit's only all classical and jazz radio station, have announced a new season of their jointly produced radio program "DSO Unmasked."
The show, which had its premiere last year, will begin airing on Sunday, September 16 from noon to 2 p.m. and will feature two high-profile guests: the internationally renowned composer John Corigliano and DSO Principal Guest Conductor and Artistic Advisor Peter Oundjian. Tentative guests for future shows this season include composer William Bolcom, conductor Charles Dutoit, newly appointed principal conductor and artistic director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and conductor Leonard Slatkin, former Music Director of the National Symphony Orchestra.
"We're very excited to continue this collaboration with WRCJ to bring a unique radio program to Detroit's airwaves," said Anne Parsons, President and Executive Director of the DSO. "The 'DSO Unmasked' show mirrors what the DSO does in its 'Unmasked' concert series - assist people in understanding classical music more fully and allowing them to get to know the remarkable artists that are composing, conducting and performing that music. This program helps us fulfill our mission to make classical music accessible to everyone."
"I think the show's a gas," said Bob Scott, Station Manager of WRCJ. "It's clear from the outset that our distinguished guests and our host Jimmy Rhoades are having a good time together, and along the way that stuffy wall between listeners and artists just melts away."
"DSO Unmasked" allows listeners a look inside the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, featuring conversations with the men and women who make it happen, from the musicians who perform on stage week in and week out, to the internationally renowned guest artists who join them, as well as composers whose works they perform. The 2-hour show has two distinct segments: "Behind the Score," a nuts-and-bolts peek at the inner workings of classical music; and "myTunes" offering a chance to kick back with some of the best professional musicians in the business, and their favorite CDs.
Past programs are made available as programming "on demand" at www.wrcj909fm.org. Guests that appeared during the inaugural year of the show included Sir Neville Marriner, Hans Graf, Neeme Järvi, Branford Marsalis, DSO Resident Conductor Thomas Wilkins, and several members of the DSO. -- www.detroitsymphony.com
