Our curators are making a display about fashion in Glasgow during the Swinging Sixties. And they want to use hundreds of old family snapshots to help tell the story.
The display will focus on the work of Glasgow designer Marion Donaldson, who brought the fashions of Swinging London to Scotland. Marion and her husband David became an overnight success.
Although Marion Donaldson never had her own shop, we plan to re-create a boutique that will tell the story of Donaldson and Glasgow's love affair with clothes. Our curators want to make a wall-mounted collage out of hundreds of reproduced photographs of people in Glasgow during the 1960s.
We would like to ask Glaswegians for help, and give them the opportunity to become part of a key feature of the new Riverside Museum when it is completed in 2010.
The Donaldson shop will be set in a period street that will re-create the feel of 1960s Glasgow. Building on the popularity our much-loved Kelvin Street, the 1960s street will be one of three period streets, giving visitors the unique experience of being able to walk through time, all the way from the 1900s to the 1980s.
Curator Kate Tansley said, 'While we'd particularly love to hear from anyone who has photos related to Marion Donaldson, we're really keen to speak to people who may have old family snapshots from 1960s Glasgow. It might be of them going out dancing, or playing in a band, or driving, or just hanging out.
'The popularity of the Marion Donaldson label reflects the mood of Glasgow at that time, and hopefully the photographs will help visitors travel back in time to the 1960s.'
The Marion Donaldson label was sold wholesale to other retailers, such as Glasgow's first fashion boutique In Gear on Gibson Street and Aquarius on Byres Road. It was also sold in Togs for Togs in Edinburgh and Fenwick's in Bond Street, London. Marion Donaldson Ltd started in 1966 with a capital of £50 and ceased trading in 1998, still turning over £1 million a year.
Marion Donaldson said, 'I think because the fashion boutiques in Glasgow sold so many of our clothes, people thought that we had our own shop. But, in actual fact, this shop display in the new museum will be our first one!' -- www.glasgowmuseums.com
