Wiltshire’s inspirational landscape: lunchtime lecture

The role of Wiltshire’s landscape in inspiring artists through time will be explored in a lunchtime lecture at the University of Bath in Swindon (Tuesday 25 September).

Professional photographer Roger Vlitos will share his passion for the countryside surrounding Swindon in an illustrated lecture showing how writers such as Thomas Hardy, artists and photographers all found inspiration in the area.

Called ‘Spirit country’, the title quotes local 19th century nature and novelist Richard Jefferies who described the timeless and inspirational qualities of the landscape.

Roger is a professional photographer whose work has appeared internationally in major magazines as well as many books on social issues.

He was drawn to work in Wiltshire after his father passed on a book by Richard Jefferies, given to him during the war by an elderly couple he met on a train journey through Swindon.

Roger also lectures on travel and landscape photography at the University of Bath and will teach a part-time course on documentary photography at the Oakfield campus starting in October.

The Spirit Country lecture will take place on Tuesday 25 September from 12.15pm to 13.30pm at the Oakfield campus and costs £6.50, including lunch. To book a place see the Related Links section. -University of Bath
