The 2007-2008 JPMorgan Chase Broadway Series opens with the scamming, scheming, double-crossing hit Broadway musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, when it cons its way into the Schuster Center, September 25 – 30.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels had its world premiere at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre in September 2004. The Broadway production, which starred John Lithgow and Norbert Leo Butz as the scoundrels, opened to rave reviews in March 2005 and ran for more than 600 performances.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels received 11 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical. Check your ethics at the door and join the scoundrels for an excursion along the French Riviera, where the two butter-you-up con artists are busy swindling well-to-do women out of their wealth. Ultra-sophisticated Lawrence Jameson has all the characteristics of a debonair gentleman caller, oozing with refined nonchalance that will charm the diamond-encrusted bracelet right off your wrist.
Ultra-sophomoric Freddy Benson has all the characteristics of a small-time crook, with just enough wit to swindle some cash for his supposedly ailing grandmother. The two meet on a train and scheme to scam the town for as much as they can. The ensuing situation unravels as Jameson and Benson discover the little French town isn't big enough for the both of them. Their new deal centers on budding young heiress Christine Colgate; whoever can wring $50,000 from her first gets to stay in town, sending the loser to beg elsewhere.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels features the music and lyrics of David Yazbek (The Full Monty) with direction by Jack O'Brien (Hairspray, The Full Monty, Damn Yankees), choreography by Jerry Mitchell (La Cage aux Folles, Hairspray, The Full Monty, Gypsy), and a book by Jeffrey Lane.
The New York Post called it, "A knockout punch to Broadway's funnybone! One of the liveliest, funniest, best-performed musicals in years. Super-smart and superior in every way." The Wall Street Journal proclaimed, "I know funny when I see it, and this show is a perfect hoot!"
