Grand Theatre Presents Playwrights Cabaret

The adventure continues! The PlayWrights Cabaret presents staged readings of 20 ten-minute scripts chosen from a broad range of submissions, over the course of two evenings in the McManus Studio Theatre.

The Grand Theatre is committed to developing and encouraging local writers through seed grants and commissions. We commissioned Peter Desbarats to write a full-length play, A Practical Joke, that we produced as part of our UnderGrand Series in 2005-2006. Once again, public readings of scripts in development will take place in the McManus Theatre the week following the Cabaret. This includes Caitlin Murphy's Civil, and plays by Gil Garratt, Hayley Gratto and Chelsea Manders. All playwrights are invited to attend, so stay tuned.

Call for Scripts

London and area writers are invited to submit scripts for the 2008 PlayWrights Cabaret, presented by The Grand Theatre. Selected scripts will be given staged readings at The Grand's McManus Studio Theatre on January 25 and 26, 2008, and each playwright will receive an honorarium of $100.

The running time for each script must be no more than 10 minutes, and playwrights are being asked to write on the theme "The Sacred and the Wild". The interpretation of the theme is left up to the individual writers.

Each piece will be performed by a maximum of four actors - two males and two females - and cross-gender casting may be used if the script requires more than two actors of the same sex. Andrea Boyd, Artistic Associate at The Grand Theatre, will join Jeff Culbert, the Project Coordinator, in directing scripts.

In addition to contributing to the two nights of presentations, playwrights will be invited to attend a rehearsal of their work. A few writers will be offered a chance to work one-on-one with a dramaturge. Each writer will also receive a complimentary ticket to attend the Cabaret on the night their script is presented.

The deadline for submissions is October 31, 2007. Selected writers will be contacted by November 30, 2007. -- www.grandtheatre.com
