Iran president to attend UN General Assembly in New York

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will attend the 62nd session of the UN General Assembly beginning September 18 in New York, Iranian media reported Friday. The president will be accompanied by a high-ranking delegation.

Ahmadinejad will meet with several heads of state, as well as with representatives of the Iranian diaspora in the U.S.

Following his two-day visit to New York, he will travel to Caracas, Venezuela, to meet with President Hugo Chavez, an outspoken critic of the U.S. foreign policy.

The Iranian president's visit to New York comes just days after U.S. military authorities said they were being "forced into the military option" by Germany's hesitation to apply additional sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program.

Iran, in turn, has vowed to teach the U.S. "a painful lesson" in the event of any attack on it. - RIA Novosti
