In celebration of the spirit of Valentine's Day, the Exploratorium presents Love of Labor, a program of short, expressive films about people who love what they do. This program takes place on Saturday, February 10th, 2007, at 2pm, and is included in the price of admission to the Exploratorium.
The program includes the following films:
Butterfly Man (2004, 6 minutes), by Samantha Rebillet, tells the evolutionary tale of Don Herbison-Evans, a man who studies butterflies and then experiences a human metamorphosis on the dance floor.
Martin (2004, 5 min.) by local filmmaker Bill Basquin, is a short poetic portrait of sheep shearer Martin Denton and his philosophical musings on rural life.
Afloat (2005, 5 min.), by Erin Hudson, is filmed from the intimate vantage point of a senior community swimming pool, where water and time suspend both body and memory. This film travels both under and above water to create a gentle meditation on growing old, staying young, and living life.
Salmon Chanted Market (2006, 25 min.), by Martin Tay, documents the camaraderie of the fish mongers who work in the Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington. Not only is this a story about a busy and popular market, but also an examination of what it means to work together as a team, with humor and friendship.
