Today is an important day in our nation’s history, the inauguration of President elect Barack Obama, and one question seems to be on the minds of parents in the Carolina region: “Are the schools closed?” Last night the North/South Carolina area was buffeted by one of the first major snow storms of the season, effectively closing many schools in the region.

Thus the answer to the parent’s question, like the politics underlying the day, can be complex. To answer it we’ll have to take a look at some of the major counties:

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system is closed.

The Anson County schools are closed.

The Carrabus County Schools are closed, as is Cannon School.

The Catawba County, Hickory City, and Newton-Conover school systems are closed, as is Catawba Valley Community College.

The Chester County Schools are closed.

The Chesterfield County Schools are closed.

Gardner-Webb University and Cleveland Community College are open.

Gaston Christian and Gaston Day schools are closed, but the Gaston County Schools have not closed.

The Iredell-Statesville and Mooresville schools are closed.
Lancaster County Schools are closed.

The Rowan-Salisbury Schools are closed, as is Rowan-Salisbury Community College.

Stanly Community College is closed.

The Union County Schools are closed, as is Union Academy and Lake Park Academy.

Also closed are Clover, Fort Mill, Rock Hill, York, and Winthrop University. York Tech will open at 10 a.m.

Therefore, if your school is closed gather with the family and enjoy a memorable day as the 44th president of the United States accepts his position as leader of the nation and steps into the Oval office.
