20 year old Brazilian model, Mariana Bridi da Costa, died today due to an infection which struck after a series of surgeries which left her without hands and feet.
Mariana Bridi da Costa was considered to be one of the young up-and-comers in the modeling industry. She had already competed twice in the Miss World contest in Brazil and last year travelled to China to compete in the Miss Bikini International Pageant.
Doctors recently discovered that young Bridi da Costa was suffering from a rare blood disease known as Septicemia. According to the Associated Press, doctors originally diagnosed her with kidney stones in December. But as her condition worsened, she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection that spread.
This eventually developed into a generalized blood infection which forced doctors to amputate the model’s hands and feet due to poor blood circulation. The amputated limbs had succumbed to necrosis, the swift deterioration of tissue, and doctors were unable to save them. Part of Bridi’s stomach was also removed as doctor’s strived to contain internal bleeding. Bridi da Costa had been in the hospital in the city of Serra in Espirito Santo state since Jan. 3 undergoing treatment.
News of her death spread quickly as interest in her plight captured the attention of the international community. "It's with great sadness that we inform you of the death of Mari, today (Saturday) at 2:30am," her family wrote on the model’s webpage.
