Angela Suleman says that her daughter is already a mother of six, including one set of twins; which makes a tribe of 14 children with the birth of her octuplets. The six older siblings range from ages 7 to 2, reported the Los Angeles Times. According to the Times, the octuplets were a result of embryos that the mother had implanted last year. What the couple never expected of course was that almost all the embryos would produce, provoking a multiple birth.
Suleman went on to say that she is worried about her daughter’s homecoming. The father of the children is due to return to Iraq soon where he works as a contract worker and handling 14 children including eight newborns is truly a mountain of a task.
The births marked only the second time that octuplets have been successfully delivered in the United States. Although the births were successful the pregnancy has been the source of criticism among the medical community. Many medical ethicists and fertility specialists are arguing that high-number multiple births endanger the mother and also frequently lead to long-term health and developmental problems for the children.
The mother, who remains unidentified, appealed for privacy while she recovers from giving birth, medical officials said Thursday.
