
The Textiles Department at the de Young Museum holds the finest collection of Turkmen carpets outside Russia, on view from December 15, 2007 to April 27, 2008.
For Tent and Trade: Masterpieces of Turkmen Weaving displays approximately 40 rugs and tent trappings from this world-class collection. The textiles come from Turkmenistan, near Afghanistan, and are woven from the wool of Saryja sheep, which are bred solely in this region.
The work of the Turkmen is of unmatched skill, artistic expression, and pattern. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Textile Education Gallery creates an installation that explores aspects of the carpet design and construction. -- www.thinker.org
