Bloodbath In Belgian Daycare Center

Yesterday 2 babies and a woman were stabbed to death in a daycare center in Dendermonde, Belgium. 8 other children between 6 months and 3 years old were severely wounded as well. Witnesses say the killer, a 20 year old man, walked into the daycare center and started attacking children immediately. The killer escaped but was caught by the police an hour later.

The man, a local, had bright red hair and had painted his face black and white. He walked into the facility with several knifes. He got in saying he needed to ask the staff something and immediately walked into the baby room. A 54 year old staff member tried to stop him but lost her life doing so. Two babies no older than a year were stabbed to death. Several others were severely wounded.

Afterwards the killer entered a room where toddlers were playing and started stabbing wildly again. The 5 remaining staff members attempted to protect the children but many more got wounded. The killer then left the facility, escaping on a bike. The emergency services arrived soon after to find a horrible blood bath. One baby and one employee were dead, a second baby was in very critical condition, 10 other children and several employees were severely wounded. The second baby died soon after.

The chaos in Dendermonde was enormous. "I had to step over bleeding and crying babies", a witness arriving just after the stabbing said. The emergency services arrived soon and were all in shock when seeing the blood bath. Parents hurrying to the daycare center after having heard the news were stopped from entering and were brought to another facility. Some had to wait for hours before hearing any news about their children.

The medical emergency plan was announced and the police spread a national alert. The local police started a manhunt for the killer using a helicopter. The 20 year old suspect was apprehended an hour later in a village near Dendermonde. He has been questioned ever since but the police says he is not cooperating. The suspect supposedly gave several false names when asked to identify and was giggling and laughing at the police.

In the meantime Belgium is in shock. "We are in deep mourning", the mayor of Dendermonde said yesterday. Many people are deeply saddened and outraged about the killings. The public television cancelled an entertainment show out of respect for the victims. Newspaper websites are flooded with outraged comments demanding heavy punishment for the killer. "We don't know if we'll ever get over this", a Dendermonde resident said.
