Penn Museum Presents River of Gold

River of Gold: Precolumbian Treasures from Sitio Conte opens on Sunday, September 23, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the University of Pennsylvania Museum with an afternoon public celebration, free with Museum admission donation, featuring music and dance of Panama, modern metal jewelry-making demonstrations, plus "golden" jewelry-making opportunities for children and their families.

Curator Dr. Pamela Jardine, co-author, with Dr. Robert Sharer, of the book, River of Gold: Precolumbian Treasures from Sitio Conte, offers a talk, "Going for the Gold," and a book signing, while Museum docents share insights and answer questions in the special exhibition.

Así es Panamá dancers, long-time coalition members of Philadelphia's Raices Culturales Latinoamericanas, present traditional folk dances of their native country. Emiliano Pardo-Tristán, Panama-born composer and classical guitar musician, performs a selection of traditional Panamanian and Latin American folkloric music. A Philadelphia resident, Mr. Pardo-Tristán has performed both locally and internationally in groups and solo. He is joined by Cynthia Folio, a flutist and a professor at Temple University. Lexi Erickson of Lexi Erickson Designs, President of the Pennsylvania Society of Goldsmiths and jewelry teacher at the Baum School of Art in Allentown, demonstrates metal jewelry working techniques, ancient and modern, throughout the afternoon.

The Museum Café joins in the festivities, featuring light Latino lunch and snack menu options. The Museum Shops feature reproduction gold-plated jewelry inspired by the artifacts in the Museum's Sitio Conte collection. -- www.museum.upenn.edu
