Valentine's Day is probably the last thing on people's minds considering the economic situation that we are in. With jobless claims at its highest in 26 years, Valentine's Day might be a non-event. However, there are ways to show your love this Valentine's that will not cost you a fortune.
Who would ever think that we might have to skimp out on Valentine's Day this year because of the recession. It makes sense to not go overboard with spending, but it does not mean you can not have fun and show your Valentines how much you appreciate them.
This year Valentine's Day is on Saturday, February 14. It means you can take your time in preparing that special meal. The special meal could be a simple and inexpensive spaghetti dinner and maybe a $5 dollar bottle of red wine. You can be creative, keep it simple, and keep it within your budget. Most of all do it together and have fun in the process.
Valentine's Day does not just have to be a lover's day, but it could be a family day. You could turn your living room into a picnic area. Get everyone involved in preparing some food and have them gather around on the floor and enjoy the day. No reservations required.
If cooking is not your fortay, then check out the local restaurants offering Valentine's Day specials. You might be able to get away with a nice sit down dinner for $50 for two. I recommend signing up at OpenTable.com. They provide a list of restaurants in all the major regions in the US. You earn points while eating at restaurants in their network. The points can then be redeemed for dinner cheques. Check their site for details. You might earn enough points to get a free meal in the future.
Valentine's Day gifts does not have to be expensive, but it does have to come from the heart. An IOU gift might be a little tacky, but a Valentine's Day card just might do the trick. A $3 dollar card that tells your loved one how much they are appreciated is priceless. If you still want to get you loved ones flowers, maybe a single rose will work instead of the usual dozen.
Valentine's is one day you should not forgo during this recession. It is an opportunity to show each other that you are together in this through thick and thin.
