It may sound like a teaser for the next Nicholas Cage film but it's fact, not fiction. Apparently a secret message has been found in a pocket watch that once belonged to Abraham Lincoln.
Of course the whole thing is far more prosaic and less spectacular than the headline would indicate. According to The Washington Post:
-- For nearly 150 years, a story has been told about a hidden Civil War message engraved inside one of Abraham Lincoln's pocket watches. Now we know it's true.
Yesterday a watchmaker at the National Museum of American History opened the pocket watch and revealed the message.
The message said: Jonathan Dillon, April 13, 1861. Fort Sumter was attacked by the rebels on the above date. Thank God we have a government.
Dillon was a watchmaker repairing Lincoln's timepiece.
Although he message is nothing earth shattering and is, in fact, rather mundane, it is still quite interesting and kind of fun to find a message hidden in Honest Abe's watch all these years.
