The United States senate has decided to heavily regulate tobacco products in an attempt to gain control over the deadly drug and to help consumers to stop smoking.

According to the N. Y. Times:

The Senate voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to impose federal
regulation on cigarettes and other forms of tobacco, passing
a landmark bill to empower the Food and Drug Administration
to control products that eventually kill half their regular
users.

The basic legislation of this bill is aimed at placing a vast number of restrictions that will severly limit advertising for tobacco producs, raise prices on these products, and have the products produced in such ways that they are less appealing and less addictive.

The bill is likely to provoke opposition among the more libertarian minded, who think people should be free to harm themselves. It will be interesting to see what the widespread publi reaction to the changes that this bill will introduce shall be.
