Gaza: Life under a blockade

A Key part of Netanyahu's speech - and it is repeated endlessly by Israeli hardliners and their supporters in the United States - is that Israel withdrew from Gaza and that was not enough for the violent Palestinians who responded to this humane and wonderful sacrifice by firing rockets; the ungrateful villains! There is much wrong with this statement.

First, Israel should never have had any settlers in Gaza. Gaza is not part of Israel; the settlers were there illegally. Leaving Gaza was not some "great and noble sacrifice." But simply Israel finally obeying international law.

Second, Israel may have withdrawn but they still have the entire region under a blockade. This Blockade prohibits Gazans from getting out and supplies from the outside world from getting in. This very blockade is the reason that Gaza suffers from extreme poverty and an almost unreal unemployment rate. See the video accompanying this article for a taste of this.

Finally, the people of Gaza are still frequently attached by the Israeli military. In short, Israel has not given the people of Gaza their freedom and dignity. The prime minister must cease his outright lies ... and people in the United States must cease repeating them.
