Republicans Offer Alternative Health Care Plan

While at a conference in England this week, Economist Paul Krugman said he was optimistic that a genuine Public Health Care option would be passed this year. I hope he is right. But the Republicans have come forward to offer an alternative plan.

Naturally the Republican "option" has no place for a government plan which it derides as taking away "choice." This is rather odd, since it would seem to offer us a choice between public and private plans. But the Republicans are using all those old catch phrases about "choice," and "freedom."

Here is the Plan according to Reuters (see also the accompanying video):

Representative David Camp, the top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee, said the plan offered significant reforms, including incentives for healthy living, protection for doctors against malpractice lawsuits and tax breaks to encourage small businesses to offer insurance to their workers.

So this is their "plan"!!!!! The Republicans think that tax breaks can solve everything!! Or at least they would like the rest of us to be dumb enough to believe this! How can some vague incentives to "healthy living," and "tax cuts" change our system at all?

The Problem is that 46-47 million Americans have no insurance. Furthermore, even the fully insured are constantly denied their needed care ... will anything in the Republican plan solve this?! Will their plan do anything at all?!?

The Republicans are either trying to play a joke on the rest of us, or they are the joke, or both! The only appropriate response to this absurd proposal by congressional republicans is laughter. Let us hope Obama sees that too.
