Che Guevara's Granddaughter goes Nude for PETA

Yes you read that correctly. Che Guevara, the great revolutionary and socialist reformer is making news again; albeit, not directly. By now we are quite used to the Communist Rebel Che Guevara being marketed on T-shirt's - often for habitual pot smokers. But now the Guevara name is being marketed for PETA.

Lydia Guevara, Granddaughter of the great Che Guevara has posed nude for PETA. PETA has been pushing this type of advertising campaign for some time now. Their basic devise is to get some celebrity to pose nude as a statement for animal rights. I must confess I can't see how being naked says anything about animal rights. And, naturally, many see the use of the female body to market anything - even a cause - as "exploitation." This will not go over well with such groups.

The story of How 24 yr old Lydia Guevara came to be featured by PETA is reported by The Huffington Post:

The granddaughter of Cuban revolutionary leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara is at the forefront of another revolution _ for vegetarianism.

Lydia Guevara poses semi-nude in a PETA campaign that tells viewers to "join the vegetarian revolution," said PETA spokesman Michael McGraw....

The print campaign is expected to debut in October in magazines and posters, McGraw said. It will be launched first in Argentina, where Che Guevara was born, and then internationally. PETA approached the 24-year-old in recent months after finding out she was a vegetarian."

Presumably the idea here is that just as Che fiercely advocated - indeed fought and died for - the rights of human beings, Lydia can fight for animal rights. Fair enough. But is posing nude the way to accomplish this? What can such stunts do? Have they any effect on Animal rights?

On the other hand, PETA is free to run such ads, and surely Ms. Guevara is entitled to pose nude. And, who knows, perhaps the nudity, or the Guevara name, or both, will inspire people to care more for the suffering and mistreatment of animals in commercial factory farming - a key focus of PETA's mission.

If there is a real revolution in animals rights here, it's fitting to have a Guevara be part of it. But I think one can excuse me for being a tad skeptical that the "famous naked women tactic" will truly promote the cause.
