On Saturday, residents of a remote Andean village near Peru's border with Bolivia reported seeing a fireball fall from the sky and hearing an explosion a short time after.

Seven police officers who were sent to collect samples from the 'meteorite' landing site later fell ill. Families living in the area also complained of nausea, migraines and vomiting. A "strange odor" was also reported.

Police authorities subsequently closed off the landing site, and scientists have been set to investigate the 30m (98.5ft) wide and 6m (19.6ft) deep crater. - RIA Novosti
