In other Champions League results, Liverpool drew 1-1 away to Porto, Real Madrid were 2-1 winners at home against Germany's Werder Bremen, Olympiakos drew 1-1 with Lazio in Athens and Valencia scored a 1-0 away victory over Schalke.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho bizarrely compared the under-performing Shevchenko to a second-grade egg before the match, but Shevchenko left the Portuguese with just a little egg on his face as he rescued a point against the Norwegian champions.
The 31-year-old forward, purchased from Italian giants AC Milan in May 2006, had been criticised for scoring only 14 goals in 52 Blues appearances.
But he repaid some faith with a face-saving goal against the visitors.
Rosenborg centre-half Miika Koppinen flicked in a free kick cross in the 24th minute but Shevchenko equalised with a header 53 minutes in, his 56th Champions League goal in 90 appearances.
Chelsea hit the woodwork twice but a draw at home against the unfancied Norwegians could prove costly in a group featuring Schalke and Valencia.
Meanwhile, 10-man Liverpool held Porto to a draw despite a red card for winger Jermaine Pennant early in the second half.
Porto piled on the early pressure and were rewarded when winger Tarik Sektioui was brought down by Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina in the area and Argentine midfielder Lucho Gonzalez converted the penalty after eight minutes.
Liverpool equalised with a Dirk Kuyt header in the 17th minute.
A long-range free kick by defender Steve Finnan was nodded across the goal by Sami Hyypia and Dutch forward Kuyt headed in from close range.
Porto stayed on the attack but were unable to capitalise, even after Liverpool were reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute when Pennant was sent off for a second yellow card.
Porto winger Ricardo Quaresma saw his shot from just outside the area cleared off the line by Hyypia in the 61st minute and further pressure failed to break through a tough Liverpool defence. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
