Australians hit brakes on new car purchases

New car sales dropped by almost 2 per cent last month, seasonally adjusted. The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) says sales of new vehicles in August slipped by 1.9 per cent.

Almost 86,000 new vehicles rolled onto Australian roads during the month.

There were declines in all states except Victoria and the Northern Territory.

The ABS says the only type of car which recorded an increase in sales in August was the sports utility, which amounted to approximately one in four new car sales.
