Minnesota Opera Premieres Giuseppe Verdi's A Masked Ball

The Minnesota Opera 2007-2008 season will open with Giuseppe Verdi's A Masked Ball. Based on the real-life assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden, Verdi's opera pulsates with drama from beginning to end.

King Gustav secretly loves Amelia, who secretly loves him back. But she's married to his best friend Anckarstroem. When her husband finds out, he's a man of vengeance.

This new co-production with Opera Colorado and Boston Lyric Opera, directed by James Robinson (Turandot, Transatlantic, Nixon in China) and designed by Allen Moyer (Norma, Pagliacci/Carmina burana, Nixon in China, The Barber of Seville, The Grapes of Wrath), is a company premiere.

"It is always exciting to add another opera to this company's repertoire," said Artistic Director Dale Johnson, "and this Verdi masterpiece is a big, bold addition." Metropolitan Opera soprano Cynthia Lawrence (The Marriage of Figaro) returns as Amelia, tenor Evan Bowers makes his Minnesota Opera debut as Gustav, baritone Charles Taylor makes his debut as Anckarstroem, contralto Jill Grove debuts as Ulrica and Miguel Harth-Bedoya (Tosca) returns to conduct.

Performance dates are September 22, 25, 27, 29. -- www.mnopera.org
