Initially completed in 2003 and later revised in 2007, the concerto was written to be a "prescription" of sorts for self-improvement. It is a neo-classical work inspired by a wide variety of ideas ranging from film scores to authentic classical oboe concerti.
Fossa is a prolific composer, having written works ranging from solo instrument pieces to compositions for full band and orchestra. His music has been performed in various venues throughout the United States, England and Brazil. Fossa is Principal Oboist of the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra, the Northwest Florida Symphony Orchestra and Co-Principal Oboist of the Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra. He balances an active performance career with his position on the faculty of Pensacola Junior College.
Under the direction of Maestro Peter Rubardt, the concert will also feature two serenades that will create a soul-stirring mood for this performance in the beautiful sanctuary of Trinity Presbyterian Church. Elgar's wistful Serenade in E Minor with its gorgeous melodies opens the evening. Guest artists Jeff Leenhouts, French horn, and Frederick Urrey, tenor, will perform one of Britten's most beautiful and memorable creations, Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings. Britten's haunting serenade will lead into the playful tunefulness of Grieg's beloved Holberg Suite to conclude the program. -- www.pensacolasymphony.com
