Alexandre Tharaud Plays With Singapore Orchestra

Following his highly successful 2006 outing with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra playing Ravel's Concerto in G, Alexandre Tharaud returns on October 12 to take on the Concerto for Left Hand, composed by Ravel for the Austrian pianist Paul Wittgenstein, who had lost his right arm in World War I. Its revolutionary jazz-influenced rhythms have made this work deservedly popular today.

An outstanding soloist as well as a fine chamber musician, young pianist Alexandre Tharaud has dedicated much of his time to French music. His recent recordings of Rameau's Nouvelles Pièces de Clavecin, Ravel's complete works for solo piano and Bach's Italian Concerti have received numerous international ovations and accolades.

Tharaud began playing the piano at the age of five and later went on to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Paris. He began his international career when he won the 2nd Prize at the ARD Competition in Munich.

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra, led by Music Director Lan Shui, will also perform Barber's Overture to The School for Scandal and Rachmaninov's lyrical Second Symphony, which contains in its Adagio one of the most beautiful melodies in classical music. -- www.sso.org.sg
