Dicapo Opera Presents 'La Fanciulla Del West'

Dicapo Opera Theatre will present 'La Fanciulla Del West'. Puccini's La fanciulla del West (The Girl of the Golden West) with a libretto by Guelfo Civinini and Carlo Zangarini was based on the play The Girl of the Golden West by David Belasco.

First performed by the Metropolitan Opera in 1910 starring Enrico Caruso as Dick Johnson, the shoot'em-up story is set against the backdrop of the California Gold Rush of 1849.

Minnie the popular mistress of "Polka," a miners' tavern and gambling house, falls in love with bar patron Dick Johnson who is really the bandit Ramerrez. When he promises to change his ways, she saves Ramerrez from the hangman's noose by appealing to the miners to set him free. The opera is sung in Italian with English Dicapo titles.
