
The Middle East peace mediators known as the Quartet have backed ongoing talks between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
During a meeting at the United Nations they also gave their support to a US-sponsored Middle East peace conference, set down for November.
The quartet comprises of the United Nations, the United States, the European Union and Russia.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says key Arab nations will be invited to the November conference.
She did not mention them by name, but they take in the Arab League members of a follow-up committee which includes Syria.
