Anúna—Celtic Origins At New Jersey

New Brunswick's State Theatre presents Anúna, the original choral group from Riverdance, in their U.S. premiere tour of Celtic Origins on Saturday, October 13 at 8pm. This truly unique musical group is comprised of 16 world-class singers. Tickets range from $30-55 (group, college, and senior discounts available).

Bridging the gap between classical and popular music, Anúna has an extraordinary sound all its own. The music is pulsating, hair-raising, emotive, mystical and unusual—part Classical, part Folk, part World, part Celtic. The group's performance spans over 1,000 years of music history while showcasing a unique and beautiful vocal sound.

Stopping in more than 40 U.S. cities to support the release of its brand new CD/DVD and Public Television special Celtic Origins, 2007 is Anúna's most important year to date. The CD, which released July 17th exclusively through Borders Stores, is the #1 selling World Music CD in the U.S. according to Nielsen Sound Scan.

Celtic Origins boasts 19 songs and includes music written and composed by Anúna creator and founder Michael McGlynn as well as special arrangements of traditional songs including: "Greensleeves," "Scarborough Fair," "I Dreamt I Dwelt In Marble Halls," and "Our Wedding Day." The CD closes in tribute to the late American folk singer/songwriter John Denver with a very special duet version of Denver's chart-topping hit, "Annie's Song" performed by Michael McGlynn and his twin brother John, Anúna's director.

ABOUT ANÚNA

The members of Anúna were first seen on Public Television as the original vocal group featured in Riverdance. Since forming Anúna, the group has seen tremendous chart-topping European success and international acclaim. The Liverpool Guardian writes, "…[the group's] haunting melodies, sung without any musical accompaniment, won rapturous applause and proved beyond doubt that Anúna's repertoire extends beyond Riverdance…"

Often credited with being the first and original creators of the entire Celtic Soprano genre, they have performed and recorded with an illustrious list of international musical performers including: Sting, Barry Manilow, Elvis Costello, Michael Crawford, The Chieftains, Ashley MacIsaac, and Sinead O'Connor.

Composer, manager, and member Michael McGlynn founded Anúna in 1987. His original hope for the group was to "make the general Irish public aware of the beauty of choral music by introducing it to them in a way that they could understand." However, beginning in 1991, Anúna switched from singing contemporary European and Irish music to McGlynn's original works and arrangements almost exclusively.

The members of Anúna are Lucy Champion, Ian Curran, Elaine Donnelly, Alice Gildea, Toby Gilbert, Patrick Hughes, John McGlynn, Michael McGlynn, Sinéad McGoldrick, Rory Musgrave, Derek O'Gorman, Aengus Ó Maoláin, Garrath Patterson, Charlotte Richardson, and Catrina Scullion. -- www.statetheatrenj.org
