The Everyman and Unity theatres play host to a miniature European festival of theatre as two of Europe's most innovative and exciting companies arrive in Liverpool from October 16 to 20.
Czech company Farm in The Cave visit the Everyman with the Sclavi/The Song of an Emigrant, a haunting portrayal of life as an outsider. An anonymous Slovak economic migrant returns home after many years spent in America, but the reality of the return does not resemble that of his dreams. A multiple award-winner at last year's Edinburgh festival, Sclavi/The Song of an Emigrant fuses the songs, testimonies and authentic letters of real-life Eastern European migrants with raw physical action in this dynamic and poignant piece.
At unitytheatre, Norway's Jo Strømgren Kompani present The Convent, a surreal dance piece that is as visually stunning as it is funny. In a remote valley far away from society, three nuns are serving time in a small convent. The divine harmony is long gone and the friendly atmosphere is about to reach rock bottom. As the lack of bread and water reaches crisis point, their doubts and fears blend with misinterpretations and reach diabolical dimensions within the thick walls of stone.
Gemma Bodinetz, Artistic Director of the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, explains why the two theatres have come together to present the festival:
"As we approach the European Capital of Culture year this unique collaboration offers Liverpool theatregoers the opportunity to dip their toes into the waters of European physical theatre with two outstanding companies. The distinctive styles of movement, song and spoken word combine to weave stories that are beautiful and dramatic, whatever language you speak."
Graeme Phillips, Artistic Director of unitytheatre, on the choice of the companies to come to Liverpool:
"Aurora Nova is the Edinburgh Festival venue I go to annually to recharge my batteries with a feast of the most exciting world theatre, so I am delighted that this collaboration with the Everyman allows us to bring you two exceptional examples of work that I have been enjoying for years."
Both Farm in The Cave and Jo Strømgren Kompani are being brought to Liverpool by Aurora Nova Touring with the support of The Liverpool Culture Company programme. -- www.everymanplayhouse.com
