The Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturdays event attracts thousands of visitors to free programs of art and entertainment each month. On October 6, the Brooklyn Museum celebrates BAM 25th Next Wave Festival by co-organizing an exciting evening of live music, dance performances, spoken word, and a dance party inspired by the special exhibition Infinite Island: Contemporary Caribbean Art.
From 6 to 7 p.m., distinguished professor and writer Elizabeth Nunez reads from her recent novel, Prospero's Daughter, a re-telling of Shakespeare's The Tempest set in the Caribbean. At 6:30 p.m., Inspirit Dance Company presents a contemporary dance about the discovery and the Diaspora of the Caribbean. From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., participants are invited to create their own imaginary map of the Caribbean with the help of an artist featured in the Infinite Island exhibition.
Also from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., pianist Arturo O'Farrill and his septet, Riza Negra, perform a hybrid of Latin and American funk. Award-winning violinist and composer and BAM Next Wave Festival artist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) will also perform.
At 7 p.m., Infinite Island artist Nicole Awai discusses her work. At 8 p.m., curator Tumelo Mosaka gives a tour of Infinite Island accompanied by a Sign Language interpreter.
Also at 8 p.m., a spoken word performance and discussion by poet and performer Samantha Thornhill explores Caribbean-American identity and feminism. At 8:30 p.m. BAMcinématek presents the film One Love (Rick Elgood and Don Letts, 2003, 100 min., PG-13) starring Ky-Mani Marley, a heartwarming tale of young lovers from different worlds brought together by music.
At 9 p.m ., the ten-piece band Charanga Soleil and DJ Neva present high-energy Cuban, Congolese, and Haitian music in the Museum's Rubin Pavilion.
And from 9 to 11 p.m. the legendary DJ Rich Medina spins a special mix of funk laced with son, rumba, and merengue at the dance party in the Beaux-Arts Court. For the first time, Target First Saturday will feature a video competition open to visitors of October's event. Participants are invited to show how the Museum looks through their eyes by shooting a one-minute video with a video camera, digital camera, or cell phone.
The top ten entries will be featured in the Community section of the Museum's Web site and will be eligible for prizes. The first-place winner will receive a $100 Museum Shop gift certificate. Second prize is a $50 gift certificate, and third prize is a $25 gift certificate. -- www.bletchleypark.org.uk
