Concern over Tasmanian petrol price

There has been a sudden rise in Tasmanian petrol prices. The RACT says it has received many calls and emails from members complaining about price rises of up to 18 cents a litre for unleaded fuel in the space of 24 hours in Hobart.

It says some city service stations have raised the price from $1.16 cents a litre to $1.39.

Prices have also risen in the north, going up by around 10 cents to $1.23.

The RACT's chief executive, Greg Goodman says while oil companies have stopped discounting in Tasmania, the rise should not be that sharp.

"The RACT are very concerned that it's gone up to this price, particularly when the Australian dollar has strengthened," he said.

"We don't see any justification and more particularly the current price in Melbourne is $1.21 point nine cents a litre." © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
