Artisans And Kings Opens At Denver Museum

The Denver Art Museum will open Artisans & Kings: Selected Treasures from the Louvre one night early on Friday, October 5, from 5 to 10 p.m. to kick off the first annual Denver Arts Week, sponsored by the Denver Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Visitors that evening will be among the first to see this exhibition of paintings, sculptures, drawings and decorative arts created or collected during the reigns of the French Kings Louis XIV, XV and XVI that eventually became the core of the Musée du Louvre's renowned collections. In addition, the Museum will offer a festive French "date night" atmosphere with music and dance performances, plein air painters and a crêpe cart on the plaza as well as a wine bar in the Hamilton Building lobby.

On Saturday, October 6, Free First Saturday continues the celebration of Denver Art Week. The Museum will offer free general admission to Colorado residents (not including the Louvre exhibition) as part of First Free Saturday and Ballet Ariel and Kim Olson/Sweet Edge contemporary dance will present special afternoon performances at 1 and 3 p.m.

Trails to Eagle, featuring Norman Rockwell paintings – one day only—Saturday, October 6 Eight original paintings by renowned American illustrator Norman Rockwell will be on view at the Denver Art Museum on Saturday, October 6, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit is part of a twelve-city tour across America during 2007.

The Rockwells form the core of a display of 20 original paintings featuring Scouting themes, which are on loan from the National Scouting Museum in Irving, Texas. The exhibition features other artists as well, including Joseph Csatari, George Roderigue, J.C. Leyendecker, and Remington Schuyler. The eight Rockwell paintings are part of the National Scouting Museum's collection of 61 original Rockwell works created for the Boy Scouts. Rockwell's first and only salaried job was as art editor for Boy's Life magazine, the youth magazine of the Boy Scouts of America. Subsequently he painted covers for the magazine and illustrations for annual Scouting calendars.

On Friday, October 26, come dressed to impress and ready to bathe in the lavish and luxurious at the Denver Art Museum's Untitled #9 (Deluxe) event. Ooh la la! On the final Friday in October, the Museum will showcase the luxurious lifestyle of the French Kings and courtesans, celebrating he opening of the new blockbuster exhibit, Artisans & Kings: Selected Treasures from the Louvre. Like all Untitled events on the last Friday of every month, Untitled #9 (Deluxe) will include lively art-related activities, unusual tours, music, a cash bar, and a jolt of the unexpected.

These popular events run from 6 to 10 p.m., and are included in general admission. The Denver Art Museum is located on 13th Avenue between Broadway and Bannock Streets in downtown Denver. Open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday noon-5 p.m.; closed Mondays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Admission for Colorado residents: $10 adults, $8 seniors and students.

Admission for non-Colorado residents: $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and students, $5 for visitors aged six to eighteen, free for children under 6. Other pricing may apply for special exhibitions.
