Theatre Under The Stars Announces 'Tommy Tune Awards'

Theatre Under The Stars (TUTS) is thrilled to announce that the sixth annual Tommy Tune Awards will include 43 high schools from the Greater Houston area. Developed by TUTS in 2002, the Tommy Tune Awards honors musical theatre excellence at the high school level.

TUTS' Tommy Tune Awards are named for Houston native and Lamar High School alumnus, Tommy Tune. A performer, director, and choreographer, Tune received nine Tony Awards for the following productions: Seesaw, My One and Only, A Day in Hollywood/A Night in the Ukraine, Nine, Grand Hotel, and The Will Rogers Follies.

Also presented that evening, the Ruth Denney Award recognizes the lifetime achievement of those individuals who have played an instrumental role in shaping the lives of young artists. Denney began her career in Houston, where she taught at Lamar High School for many years as Tune's drama teacher. In 1971, she founded Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts and later became a professor of drama education at the University of Texas, where she taught for more than a decade. A few of Denney's distinguished students have included Robert Crutchfield, Robert Foxworth, Carlin Glynn-Masterson, Paula Prentiss and Jaclyn Smith. Previous Ruth Denney Award recipients have included Denney, choreographer Patsy Swayze, and Professor and Director Dr. Sidney Berger.

The Tommy Tune Awards ceremony is open to the general public, and tickets will be available for purchase beginning on April 8, 2008. -- www.tuts.com
