Illustrated Lecture At Grand Theatre

Join guest speaker Sue Arthur MA as she takes you through a history of Blackpool and the entertainment industry in The Lion and Albert Lecture on Wednesday 10th October in the Lawrence House Studio at 2.30pm.

'There's a famous seaside place called Blackpool, that's noted for fresh air and fun'

When Marriott Edgar wrote his famous monologue for Stanley Holloway in 1933, he was capturing an image of Blackpool that would endure for the rest of the century. In an era when families dressed up for their day at the seaside, where little boys proudly carried their sticks with 'orses 'ead 'andles and where health and safety were matters of common sense, the tragic tale of Albert gives us a comic postcard view of Blackpool in the 30s.

This lecture will interest everyone who remembers Blackpool in the middle of the twentieth century, when the crowds blotted out the beach, variety was presented twice nightly and families 'seeking for further amusement' could choose from all of the resort varied entertainments.

It will also appeal to students studying the social history of the 1930s, the seaside or the entertainment industry.
