Pakistani Court to rule on Musharraf nomination

Political opponents of Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf are making a last-ditch challenge to his legal right to run for re-election on Saturday.

The Supreme Court will convene today to hear a petition challenging the weekend decision by the election commission to accept General Musharraf's nomination.

A decision is expected before next weekend which could include an order against the President that the vote be delayed.

The commission has already reduced the number of candidates to five after receiving more than 40 nominations.

In a separate move, the Government has suspended the Islamabad Police Chief and two senior officials after a violent crackdown on protesters at the weekend. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
