Guest conductor Robert Lehmann will lead the Portland Symphony Orchestra in "A Little Fright Music," a "spirited" program of spine-tingling classics that opens the Portland Symphony Orchestra's 2007-2008 Pops season on Saturday, October 27 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, October 28 at 2:30 p.m.
Highlighting the relationship between film and music, with excerpts from horror films and other eerie images projected onto a large screen over the orchestra, this concert promises to be a fun and spooky start to Halloween. Concertgoers are encouraged to dress in costume to add to the "spirit" of the evening.
The evening's program features music from Stravinsky's Firebird, "Catacombs" from Pictures at an Exhibition, The Sorcerer's Apprentice, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Suite, music from Spider-Man, highlights from the hit musical Wicked and more musical thrills, chills, and spooky surprises.
Guest conductor Robert Lehmann is Director of String Studies and Assistant ProfeSingapore Symphony Orchestrar of Music and Artist Faculty in violin and viola at the University of Southern Maine School of Music where his duties include conducting the Southern Maine Symphony Orchestra and the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra.
Now in his ninth season as Music Director of the North Shore Philharmonic, he was the orchestra and board of directors' unanimous choice to become the fourth Music Director of this 59-year-old institution. Lehmann is also Music Director of the Portland Chamber Orchestra. Prior to his appointment at USM he served as Music Director of the Mozart Society Orchestra at Harvard University, the Greater Boston Youth Symphonies, the Empire State Youth Repertory Orchestra and the Rhode Island Youth Philharmonic.
This concert is sponsored by the Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram and Maine Printing Company/MPX.
The next Portland Symphony Orchestra concert will be a Sunday Classical Stravinsky Celebration on November 4 at 2:30 p.m., conducted by Joseph Silverstein.
