
Kaeja d'Dance is proud to announce the first annual MADance Screen Salon (Movement & Dance Screen Salon), an exhilarating evening of dance on film presented at The Drake Hotel (at 1150 Queen Street West, Toronto) on October 26, 2007 with two screenings (CurrentlyMAD at 8 pm followed by a post-screening dialogue with special guests Marc Glassman & Douglas Rosenberg, and MAD About Bravo!FACT at 9:30 pm).
The evening will finish with a light reception hosted by Bravo!FACT (Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent). Tickets are $10 per screening, or both for $15.
Buzzing with the energy of aspiring and established dance filmmakers, CurrentlyMAD presents an engaging selection of ten new Canadian dance film creations including works by Kelly Hargraves, Elif Iskozlu, Allen Kaeja, Karen Kaeja, Patricia Kim, Anthony Morgan, Patricia Plasko, Pascal Provost, Douglas Rosenberg & Emily Tench. A brief post-screening dialogue will provide audiences with an opportunity to engage in an enlightening discussion of the major issues, themes and trends experienced within the dance on screen genre today. MAD About Bravo!FACT follows with an outstanding program of Bravo!FACT dance shorts including works by Mark Adam, Clancy Dennehy, Pablo Diconca, Clarence Ford, Dana M. Gingras, Jenn Goodwin, Luke Langsdale/Robert Glumbek, Marlene Millar/Philip Szporer, Britt Randle & Kenneth Sherman/Noam Gagnon.
Pioneers in the emerging genre of dance on screen, Karen & Allen Kaeja have created MADance to house and celebrate the talents of a diverse range of dance filmmakers, styles and production values. Exposing an enticing range of cutting edge and current voices in the field is part of our goal as well as witnessing the insight and vision of dancers and filmmakers bridging their aesthetics in this burgeoning field. There is a fantastic array of dance film blossoming in this country by exceptional artists. Allen and I are inspired to mobilize the current success, investigation and future potential of the dance on screen genre in Canada to art lovers of dance, film, and beyond.
Karen Kaeja
Karen & Allen Kaeja have created 14 dance films over the past 10 years, which have been acclaimed by critics and dance audiences alike. Kaeja d'Dance has been commissioned by the CBC, WHA (Wisconsin, USA), Bravo!NETWORK and Bravo!FACT for their work, which has played in festivals and been broadcast worldwide. The films have been screened hundreds of times, earning them numerous prestigious nominations and awards. Recently they received a Best Performance nomination and were short listed for the Jury Special Mention from the Banff World Television Awards (of which Scorcese won), American Choreography Award (Los Angeles) and Gemini Award nomination for Best Choreography and Best Direction of a Performing Arts film.
The films have also been awarded: Best Performance (Moving Pictures), IMZ Special Jury Award, Camera Re-work as well as a Jury Citation (Europe): American Dance Festival's - Certificate of Distinction (USA): Nominated and Short-listed for the VideoDansa Barcelona Prize; and Best of Moving Pictures and Bravo!FACT retrospectives. Many of the company's films reside in the permanent collections of key international organizations, educational institutions and libraries including the Jewish Museum and the Museum of Modern Art (New York) and Yad Vashem (Israel). Their films have been aired on television stations around the world including Australia, New Zealand, France, USA and Italy.
