After June, her favored daughter achieves fame, Louise, discovers her own talent, becoming one of the biggest names in show business. Set against the freewheeling days of vaudeville and burlesque, GYPSY goes behind the curtain to explore the reality of the grueling life in show business.
Written by three virtuosos in American musical theater, namely Arthur Laurents (book), Jule Styne (music), and Stephen Sondheim (lyrics), its score is one of the most distinguished in Broadway history that includes the songs everyone loves to sing along to, like "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "You Gotta Get a Gimmick," "Some People," and "Let me Entertain You."
A musical that earned countless Tony awards in its original production and its revival, GYPSY has been recreated by some of Hollywood's most famous faces. Originally set to the stage with Ethel Merman as Mama Rose in 1959, the production's popularity carried it to its revival with Angela Lansbury in 1974, then again in 1989 with Tyne Daly as its star actress, then most recently in 2003 with Broadway- luminary Bernadette Peters. GYPSY holds an illustrious reputation among some of Broadway's most popular musicals.
The awards and popularity didn't stop at the theater; GYPSY was brought to the silver screen in two different films with Hollywood big names like Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood in the 1962 earning three Academy Award® nominations, as well as six Golden Globe® nominations and winning the Best Actress award for Rosalind Russell. The well-known musical came to the screen again in 1993 with legendary Bette Midler for its main part. Through the years, earning awards and critical acclaim, GYPSY continues to amaze audiences with its story, music, and personalities.
This time around, GYPSY is brought to you by Phoenix Entertainment is an international theatrical producing and management enterprise, upholding its reputation under the direction of Sam Viverito and musical direction by Michael Borth.
