Typhoon heads for east China

A typhoon with winds of almost 200 kilometres an hour is on track for eastern China and is expected to make landfall by Sunday night. In the face of oncoming Typhoon Krosa, authorities have issued land and sea alerts, ordering offices and schools to be closed.

Train services and domestic flights have been stopped and many international flights have also been cancelled.

Military units have set up typhoon response centres to prepare for possible rescue and relief operations.

Several thousand homes are reported to be without electricity in northern Taiwan, which has been hit by the typhoon.

The emergency services say at least eight people have been injured in storm related accidents. © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
