Protests mark anniversary of Politkovskaya murder

Protests and private ceremonies have marked the first anniversary of the murder of one of Russia's most respected investigative journalists Anna Politkovskaya.

One year on, the investigation into the apparent contract killing is clouded with confusion as several people have been arrested but the person who ordered the murder has not been identified.

Anna Politkovskaya's colleagues have marked the anniversary by visiting her grave and her home in central Moscow, while opposition political groups have protested for justice in the case and a lack of press freedom in Russia.

On the other side of the city, tens of thousands rallied for an entirely different reason - to celebrate, for the day she was killed is also the birthday of the Russian president Vladimir Putin.

An opposition politician, Mikhail Kasyanov says Ms Politkovskaya paid the price for defending the dignity of all citizens, and her death highlighted serious problems in Russia.

"Whether we like it or not, it was a political murder and we know that this is the case," he said.

"And all unsolved political murders committed in the past, and this murder, show that the country is in trouble. And today's rally, today's march of discontent, is a consolidation of our efforts." © 2007 Australian Broadcasting Corporation
