The New Year begins with a bang at the VSO! A Scottish flavoured matinee, a swingin' Pops star, two famous children's entertainers from Treehouse TV, beautiful Baroque, the first concert of the contemporary music series at the Roundhouse, Celtic Tenors, and a monumental and magnificent classical performance with a child prodigy and an Estonian conductor.
January kicks off with the next in the Tea & Trumpets series featuring narrator Christopher Gaze and tea and cookies served in the lobby one hour before the performance. The concert features a Highland theme, and includes a piper from the Vancouver Police Pipe Band. Next up is VSO Pops, with multi-platinum recording artist Ann Hampton Callaway crooning for two nights of jazz and swing standards, with conductor Jeff Tyzik.
That same weekend, Judy & David from Treehouse TV fame join the orchestra for their Symphonic Adventures program for the children. Concertmaster Mark Fewer takes the reins for a performance of beautiful Baroque and Classical music at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. At the same time, the other half of the orchestra performs the first concert of the 2006/2007 Symphony at the Roundhouse series, featuring contemporary music and host Jeffrey Ryan. This concert is performed in collaboration with the PuSh Festival.
After this, the VSO performs with The Celtic Tenors in an evening of Irish-flavoured songs and popular arias. The month concludes with the next Horizons series concert, featuring spectacular 16-year old violinist Eugene Ugorski and brilliant Estonian conductor Eri Klas.
