Tokyo, Japan – 9 October 2007 – The Japanese Cancer Association (JCA) in association with Wiley-Blackwell, the World’s largest society publisher, announced the two inaugural recipients of the ‘Cancer Science Young Scientists Award’ at the JCA’s Annual General Meeting today.
An official award of the JCA dedicated to the development of young researchers from the Asia region in the area of cancer science and research, two young researchers – Dr. Hai-Qiang Mai and Dr. Shuping Peng – were conferred this award in recognition for being the most outstanding authors of articles published in JCA’s journal Cancer Science.
Both awardees received a 12-month online subscription to Cancer Science, book prizes from Wiley-Blackwell valued at US$150, as well as a testimonial from the Editor-in-Chief and Editors of the journal. Dr. Mai also made an oral presentation at the 66th JCA Annual Meeting of his award winning paper entitled “Therapeutic targeting of the endothelin a receptor in human nasopharyngeal carcinoma”, (Cancer Science, 2006; Vol. 97, Issue 12).
Dr. Shuping Peng won the award for her article on “The expression of ezrin in NPC and its interaction with NGX6, a novel candidate suppressor” (Cancer Science, 2007; Vol. 98, Issue 3).
The Editor-in-chief of Cancer Science, Professor Takashi Tsuruo, said “This award was driven to recognize and promote the development of young talent from Asia so we opened entry to all researchers under the age of 35 and employed by an institution or university in the field of cancer and who had published as first or corresponding authors in Cancer Science. We had many applications in a range of subjects covering carcinogenesis, tumor biology and pathology, molecular biology and genetics, epidemiology and prevention, immunology and virology, and, experimental therapeutics and clinical medicine.”
Mark Robertson, President of Wiley Japan, said, “The success of this inaugural award is evidence of Asia’s high quality research output. Our aim is to work closely with JCA to reinforce Cancer Science’s emerging position as the leading publication and resource for all professionals and researchers in the Asia-Pacific region.”
