The installation centers on the traditional Mexican celebration Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the Dead. The Illinois Artisans Shop is located at the James R. Thompson Center, 100 W. Randolph Street, Suite 2-200 and is open M-F 9-5.
The word "catrina" is the feminine form of the word "catrĂn", which means "dandy". Often depicted in ornate dress, "La Catrina" is intended to show that the rich and fashionable, despite their pretensions to importance, are equally susceptible to death.
Dia De Los Muertos is primarily a way to honor and remember departed loved ones and family. Many homes make traditional altars with sweet breads, candy, and mementos to place in honor of the dead. According to Lopez, this tradition is as much a celebration of life as it is of death.
Using all recycled materials, Lopez will transform the window in celebration of Dia De Los Muertos. All work on display will be available for purchase throughout the month of October. -- www.museum.state.il.us
